Kaddu Arafat is a medical doctor and molecular scientist with a background in biomedical sciences and clinical medicine, currently working at the intersection of molecular diagnostics, genomics, and translational research. His work focuses on leveraging advanced molecular and bioinformatics approaches to address pressing challenges in infectious diseases and global health, particularly in low-resource settings.
He is actively involved in designing and implementing innovative diagnostic solutions, including CRISPR-based platforms and biosensor technologies for rapid detection of infectious diseases such as sepsis and urinary tract infections. His research interests also extend to human genetics, where he investigates host genetic factors, such as HLA variation, in chronic hepatitis B infection to better understand disease progression and improve patient outcomes.
Working within Supranational TB Reference Laboratory – Uganda, he contributes to molecular research, assay development, and operational innovation, with a strong emphasis on quality assurance, data integrity, and sustainable laboratory practices. He has experience in next-generation sequencing workflows, genetic analysis, and integrating computational tools into laboratory-based research.
Beyond laboratory science, he is deeply interested in the development of scalable health innovations, including national DNA databases, precision diagnostics, and digital health solutions. His work is driven by a commitment to bridging the gap between cutting-edge scientific advances and real-world clinical application, ensuring that innovations are accessible, impactful, and tailored to the needs of African health systems.
He is particularly passionate about building capacity in genomics and bioinformatics, advancing research that informs policy and clinical practice, and contributing to a future where precision medicine and advanced diagnostics are equitably available across diverse populations.
