Moses Luutu Nsubuga

Moses Luutu Nsubuga is a Ugandan bioinformatician and genomics specialist working at the intersection of microbial genomics, next-generation sequencing, and translational biotechnology. He is currently a Field Application Specialist for Illumina sequencing technologies at Medisell Uganda Limited, where he leads the technical implementation, training, and deployment of high-throughput genomics platforms across academic, clinical, and public health laboratories in East Africa. Moses has extensive experience in whole-genome sequencing, genomic epidemiology, and antimicrobial resistance research, with particular expertise in the mobilome of bacterial pathogens and the role of mobile genetic elements in pathogen evolution and resistance dissemination. His work has contributed to genomic surveillance and characterization of major pathogens including Staphylococcus aureus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, HIV, and SARS-CoV-2 within African health
systems. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Bioinformatics at Makerere University, where his research focuses on the phage mobilome of ESKAPE pathogens, computationally characterizing bacteriophages, anti-phage defense systems, and phage-encoded lytic proteins to support genomic surveillance and the discovery of next-generation antimicrobial strategies. Beyond research, Moses actively contributes to genomics capacity building and science communication in Africa, delivering technical training and lectures on next- generation sequencing and bioinformatics to researchers, clinicians, and public health laboratories. He is also interested in innovative approaches to antimicrobial resistance education, including the use of immersive tools such as virtual reality and interactive “bio-selfies” to communicate microbiology and genomics concepts to broader audiences. His broader scientific interests span phage biology and phage-based therapeutics,
CRISPR technologies, cancer genomics, cell and gene therapy, antimicrobial resistance evolution, and the development of bioinformatics-driven biotechnology platforms that translate genomic data into practical diagnostic, therapeutic, and public health solutions.
